Manchester named best city in UK to live and work in
2021 was a period of great change for the UK’s working world with many people given the opportunity to choose more freely where to live and work. This has resulted in significant transformation to the working landscape, with new areas of the country vying for young professionals to set up home.
Traditionally, property in London has been a hugely popular with graduate and workers starting their careers. However, an extensive new study has named Manchester as the number one place for young professionals to work and live.
Orega Offices looked at several factors to create a definitive top ten list of the best places in the UK to live and work in. To come to their conclusions, they examined a range of key metrics including pollution levels, quantity of green flag parks, coworking spaces, Michelin Guide restaurants, average rental costs and the number of job listings. They then assigned a score to each city with Manchester coming out on top.
As one of the fastest growing cities in Europe, it is perhaps unsurprising that Manchester found a place at the top spot. The northern city has become a hub for business, and with over 12,000 job listings, this city provides its residents a wealth of superb opportunities. Compared to London, which came second in the study, Manchester also offers considerably more affordable housing.
Other key factors to Manchester’s success include the huge number of coworking spaces available, with 40 different services currently open in the city. Manchester’s thriving foodie scene is reflected with 20 Michelin Guide Restaurants, including Mana which also holds a coveted Michelin Star. Finally, the 10 “green flag” parks across Manchester and impressive CO2 level helped Manchester score well for its environmental credentials.
“Every year young professionals are moving from home towns to vibrant and exciting cities to start their careers,” said Lara Walker, marketing and sales director at Orega, about the new research.
“Considering all the needs and wants that come into play when deciding which city can be overwhelming.
“Maintaining a high quality of life while starting a career is really important, and young professionals desire cities with good amenities, a wealth of career opportunities and a flexible work/life balance.”
