Every year, since 2008, Time Out has been publishing a definitive list of the World’s Coolest Neighbourhoods. Collated with the experiences and opinions of thousands of locals in hundreds of cities across the world, the list provides a fascinating insight for property investors.
This year, 27,000 city-dwellers around the world were asked to nominate their city’s coolest and most culturally exciting neighbourhoods. Time Out’s local editors and writers than rated each of the neighbourhoods for their great vibes, culture, community spirit, resilience, food, drink and nightlife. They also looked at sustainability and innovative green initiatives, along with other important quality-of-life factors that promote resident’s stress-free living.
Manchester was recently ranked as the third best city in the world by Time Out, and now Ancoats, in the heart of the city, has featured in the Top 20 of its annual World’s Coolest Neighbourhoods alongside some impressive names including New York, Hong Kong and Sydney.
The Time Out Guide is glowing with its praise for the area. “What makes Ancoats, the onetime home of Manchester’s cotton mills, so damn magical?” it asks.
“For one thing, the almost cliched blend of past and present which is visible on every street, with super-stylish new developments springing up.
“Apartments now inhabit those mills, while some of Manchester’s very best places to eat and drink fill the ground floors – many with a focus on fresh, locally sourced produce.
“Venues like Hope Mill Theatre and St Michael’s put on top-notch live shows catering to a community that really has come together over the past year.”
